Help for tantrums

Know what to do when a tantrum takes over.

You do not need the perfect sentence. You need a short plan for safety, the boundary, continued crying, and what comes after.

Right now

Start with these three moves.

The sequence matters more than perfect wording. Deal with safety, make the message easy to understand, and leave teaching for later.

01

Protect the moment

Make the space safer. Move hard objects, step away from traffic, and protect siblings without turning safety into a lecture.

02

Say less

Use one short sentence. Name the limit or feeling, then pause. A child in a highly emotional state may not be able to process an explanation.

03

Hold the next step

Stay close enough to help when you can. Your job is not to stop every tear; it is to hold the safe boundary without adding more demands.

If it keeps going

The response can be working even when your child is still upset.

If the crying continues, the plan has not failed. Repeat the boundary only when needed, reduce questions, and wait. Offer water, a quieter place, or closeness if your child usually accepts it—but do not keep inventing distractions or rewards to make the feeling disappear.

After everyone is steadier

Reconnect, learn one thing, and make the next moment easier.

  • Reconnect before teaching: “That was hard. I’m glad we’re together.”
  • Briefly restate what stayed true: “We still couldn’t buy the toy.”
  • Notice one likely trigger—hunger, fatigue, transition, sensory load, or frustration—and change one part of the next similar moment.

How Momentures helps

Trustworthy guidance made usable in real family life.

Momentures finds and compares current professional guidance and relevant research, checks where it applies and where it does not, then translates the useful parts into plain language, scripts, routines, and decision aids.

Cited institutions and researchers are sources; their inclusion does not mean they endorse Momentures. Individual resources show their own evidence and review status.
